Draft: waiting for WeldonPC's review.
Privacy
The Garfield Post collects only what it needs to run the posts, and sells nothing.
What we keep
- Your email address, to send your confirmation and your private link. It is never shown. It is deleted 30 days after your post ends (a one-way fingerprint is kept so a removed post cannot simply be posted again).
- What you write: the names and message in your post. It is deleted 30 days after the post ends or is taken down.
- PayPal details for paid posts: the payer's name and email and PayPal's transaction number, kept for three years for tax records. We never see card numbers.
- Your connection: we never store IP addresses, only a scrambled fingerprint used to stop abuse (rate limits, visitor counts and reports). It is cleared after 30 days, except on a report, where it is kept until the post ends.
What we do not do
- No tracking cookies, no third-party fonts and no analytics services. Most pages show one banner ad from adengine.us, WeldonPC's own ad network: see Advertising. The visitor counts on the sponsor page are counted on our own server, once per visitor per day: a page that has been open in your browser for a couple of seconds tells our server so, with no cookie and nothing sent to anyone else.
- No photos are collected.
- Posts naming anyone under 18 are kept out of search engines and show no ad.
Advertising
The home page, the milestone categories (not "In loving memory"), the seasonal walls, the monthly archive, How it works, Prices, Questions and About show one banner ad below the page, labelled "Advertisement". So does a post's own page when it may be shown in search engines (the poster allows it and nobody named is under 18), but never a remembrance. It comes from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind this site. For now the ads are for WeldonPC's own services. It is not a sponsor panel. Posting, your private link, sponsor booking, removal and report pages, these policy pages and error pages show no ad.
To show the ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your IP address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests.
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
- How your IP address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your IP address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC's own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (IP address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser's site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
Cookies
One security cookie protects the forms. The administrator's sign-in uses a session cookie, and leaves one more cookie on the administrator's own browser so that the administrator's visits are not counted as visitors. Nothing else.
Your choices
Take your post down from your private link. If a post is about you, use "This is about me: remove it" on the post. To have your data deleted, write to weldon@weldonpc.com.
